Overview:

Oberst Gerhard Engel's Infanterie-Division 12 "Wild Buffaloes" moved to reinforce the line, and with support from Panzer-Division 9, to counterattack Allied forces crossing the Ruhr. Meanwhile, the American 3rd Armored Division and Taskforce "Lovelady" were poised to attack, with the 1st Infantry Division's 26th Infantry Regiment "Blue Spaders" in the vanguard. Over the course of several days, battles raged around Stolberg as the Americans relentlessly attempted to breach the German defenses, but the "Wild Buffaloes" held fast and repulsed the assault for several days. For their tenacity, Hitler renamed the defenders of Stolberg Volksgrenadier-Division 12, while the American 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry won the Presidental Unit Citation.
