Overview:

In 1942, the Germans regained the initiative on the Eastern Front, in a campaign that resembled that of the previous summer. The panzer divisions won most battles, but could not exploit the breakthroughs due to failing logistics and the slow pace of supporting infantry. A major difference was that prisoners were no longer taken in large numbers, as the Red Army was now· better led, better equipped, and more confident after its winter victories. At the end of July, the Soviets in the Great Bend of the Don were suffering heavy losses. Stalin ordered repeated counterattacks to slow down the German advance. One such ill-fated attempt was made by the newly reformed 237th Rifle Division, supported by scores of KV, T-34, and T-60 tanks of the 7th Tank Corps. On 28 July, they attacked southwards towards Spasskoe. The 9th Panzer Division had recently left the area, leaving its defense to the 340th Infantry Division - a less than formidable foe for the massed Soviet armor and infantry.
